Within patchwork and quilting fabric there are special fabrics of printed panels that can be used for quilting.

These are normally about the size to use for a standard cushion and usually have a clever border edge which can be incorporated in the back fabric of the cushion.

To make up a cushion you quilt the panel with the wadding, thereby emphasising parts of the design to give a 3D effect. The back of the cushion can be made in a co-ordinating fabric and if you are doing an envelope opening you can use the decorative strip, normally printed beside the panel, across the centre back.

The panels or printed pictures come in a variety of subjects quite often featuring animals. There are also larger panels, some of which work as cot quilts, and others that work really well for the centre of a larger project such as a bed quilt. They are very effective and an easy way to start practising quilting stitches.

TIP: If quilting around an item in a panel you get a better effect by stitching outside the edge of the subject so that the whole subject is emphasised rather than its edge being drawn down and lost in the quilting.
